I was a runner in college, not super long distance, but I could do about 3 miles a day and feel great. It was awesome to get up in the morning and go for a long run on the GVSU campus with my friend, Tracy, and actually enjoy the quiet and beauty of campus during the summer. How far I have come from this!
As the years went by and the excuses stacked up, I completely quit running and instead took up not working out and eating horribly. Not a great combination and I put on a lot of weight. I have slowly been chipping away at this extra weight, with a couple detours (getting pregnant, losing motivation after my brother's wedding) and I am finally ready to fully commit. Pat is on board, I have the treadmill and the time, and the excuses are getting harder to say.
My first thing I am doing to motivate myself to commit myself to running and being healthy, which seem to go hand in hand for me, is training for the Riverbank Run in May. I am doing the Couch to 5K program (never heard of it? Click here) which consists of running 3 days a week. It is a good solid beginning to getting back to running.
My hope it by this summer that I will be able to do that 3 mile run through campus that I used to do every morning. It would also be like coming full circle, back to that healthy college student who put so much value in herself and her body.
