The little things...

Today was one of those days that makes me smile. You wake up in the morning, feel like it is going to be just a normal, boring Wednesday, and then boom! People in your life step in and make it special.

My amazing co-workers brought me yellow roses and a card today for an early "happy birthday" gesture. The idea that they took the time to do this just made me smile all day. Who knew a bouquet of flowers could make my whole day! To be honest, I don't even think it was the flowers that did it. I think it is the fact that they give me hope that there is just general goodness in people, that people care about each other because they want to, and that maybe this world is not as messed up as it appears (or if it is, that I am choosing to spend time with people who make it a lost less messed up). Just flowers, but it meant so much more.

My good friend Beth then took me to lunch and we got the chance to catch up. It was a fabulous hour of girl talk, gossip about work, and just relaxing. I never take lunches at work so this was a happy bonus to have a little break. Just lunch, but it was exactly what I needed.

My cousin Steph then stopped in to give me a beautiful pin on friendship that she had gotten for me. In between her classes, homework, work, and new boyfriend time, she remembered me and took the time to show some love to her older cousin. Just a pin but it was so much more!

When I got home, I found cards in the mail from both sets of my grandparents and Pat's grandparents. Such sweet cards and a cute little purse that I believe my Grandma Rose made for me. A long letter from my Grandma Lyons, written in her wonderful cursive penmanship. All wonderful, just cards and presents, but it made me smile and miss them all.

Finally, Pat and Grace decided to bake me a cake at 8pm tonight, right at Grace's bedtime. They were outside playing while I paid bills and all of a sudden there was this urgent need to make sure my cake was baked for tomorrow. The excitement in Grace's face as she told me she was making me a cake was priceless. This little love bug is more excited for my birthday than me! (I think because she knows she will get cake but that is okay!) Pat, who hates to bake, was very confused and needed a little help, but for the most part Pat and Grace made the cake and it smells delicious! Just a cake, but so much love was used to make it that it means even more...

All of these little things really mean a lot. We get so caught up in the everyday routine that sometimes it is nice to be treated special or have others show their love in different ways. You never know how much time you have with the ones you love, so days like this need to be blogged about, because I want to remember how good I felt today and how my family and friends helped me feel this way.
